Bucknell Baseball Wraps Up 2007 Season with Split at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell baseball team combined for 17 hits and junior Mathew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.) tossed his second shutout of the season as the Orange and Blue posted an 11-0 victory in game one against Navy on Sunday afternoon. The Bison dropped game two, 7-6, however, and end the 2007 campaign with a record of 16-24, 8-12 in the Patriot League. Navy moves to 32-19, 12-8 in league play.
In game one, Bucknell opened with a run in the first as freshman Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) doubled down the left field line and junior Mark Angelo (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) brought him in with a sacrifice fly.
Then in the top of the third, five straight singles resulted in two runs. The next batter, junior Ed Rubbo (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) drove in Angelo with a sacrifice fly and junior Shawn Hirsch (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) plated junior Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) with an RBI single to right field, bringing the score to 5-0.
The Bison added a sixth run in the top of the fourth after sophomore Dane Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) sent a double down the left field line and came home on a sacrifice fly by senior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas).
In the seventh, Bucknell broke the game open, scoring five on six hits and two errors. Junior Austin Turban (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and Rubbo started things off with back-to-back doubles. Hirsch drove in Turban with an infield single and Rubbo crossed the plate on the same play, following an error. Senior Dustin Kapson (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake Lehman) doubled to right field and Grandizio tapped a bunt single to bring in Hirsch. Kapson came home on a sacrifice fly by Yoder, while Grandizio scored the final run on an RBI single by Buursma.
Wilson worked seven scoreless innings for the Bison, scattering seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts to record the win (4-4). Oliver Drake started and took the loss (2-3) for Navy as he tossed three innings and gave up five runs on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
In the second contest, the Midshipmen began with a 1-0 advantage as Michael Garcia was hit by a pitch, stole second and crossed the plate on a single to left center by Thomas Hamilton.
Bucknell took the run back in the top of the third and added two more to pull ahead, 3-1. Kapson led off with a single to center and Gryskevicz doubled him in to tie the score. Buursma singled to bring home Gryskevicz and came in on a triple by Angelo.
The Bison added another in the fourth as freshman B.J. LaRosa (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) singled and Grandizio drove him in with a single through the left side.
However, Navy responded with a three-run fifth on an RBI double by Garcia, an RBI single by Kendall Bolt and a sacrifice fly by Hamilton. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Mids took a 6-4 lead on a sacrifice fly by Steven Soares and Drew Lydon scored on an error for their second of the frame.
The Orange and Blue took one of the runs back in the seventh. Gryskevicz drove a double to center, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on an RBI groundout by Buursma. In their next turn at bat, the Bison tied the score at six after Rubbo reached on an error and scored on a triple by Kapson.
Navy managed to plate the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with two out as Lydon drew a bases loaded walk on a full count, forcing in Hamilton.
Senior Nathan Mittag (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) started and went 5.2 innings on the mound for Bucknell as he allowed six runs, four earned on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts but did not pick up the decision. In relief of Mittag, sophomore Andy Campbell (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic) took the loss (1-2), giving up one run on three hits over 2.2 innings. JD Melton earned the victory (1-2) for the Mids. He threw one inning and logged one strikeout.
Buursma finished the day with four RBI to lead the Bison and went 3-for-9 at the dish with two runs scored. Gryskevicz hit 5-for-9 with two RBI and three runs scored while Yoder was 4-for-8 and Grandizio posted a 4-for-9 outing over two games.
