LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell track and field teams will host the two-day Bison Outdoor Classic at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 13-14. The meet, which will consist of 45 entered teams with 1,262 athletes, will begin Friday at 3 p.m. with the men's 100-meter dash decathlon and the women's hammer throw, while Saturday will kick off with the men's 110 hurdle decathlon at 9 a.m.
So far this season, Bucknell has qualified a Patriot League best six athletes for the NCAA East Regional Championships.
For the men, seniors Matthew Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell), Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) and Joshua Kaehler (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) have qualified for the NCAA East Regional and the IC4A Championships. On the women's side, seniors Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler Area), Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten) and Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) have earned spots in the NCAA East Regional and the ECAC Championships.
Forys, who was named the Patriot League Male Performer of the Week on Tuesday, qualified by posting a time of 8 minutes, 50.10 seconds at Princeton in then 3,000 steeplechase, which ranks him second all-time at Bucknell. His time also tops the league. At the Jim Miller Invitational, Hoffman qualified by throwing for a distance of 192 feet, 2 inches (58.58m) in the hammer throw. He owns the best mark in the league. Kaehler, who has won two out of three javelin titles this season, threw for a distance of 204-9 (62.42m) at the Tiger Track Classic.
Buczko, who has won back-to-back pole vault titles at the Tiger Track Classic and the Mason Spring Classic, qualified by clearing a height of 12-5 ½ (3.80m). She is the current Bison record holder in the pole vault and holds down the best mark in the Patriot League. Grap posted a distance of 179-3 (54.64m) at the Shamrock Invitational, which is the second best mark in the league. She is also an ECAC qualifier in the discus with a mark of 149-5 (45.54m), which ranks her second in the league behind junior Amanda Mockbee (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and in front of senior Kathleen Hart (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central), who are also ECAC qualifiers.
Also expected to compete in this weekend's meet for the men will by sophomore Kevin Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow), who qualified for the IC4A Championships in the 400 hurdles with a time of 53.50 at the Mason Spring Classic. Freshman Kyle Anthony (Barrysville, N.Y./Eldred Academy) jumped for a distance of 48-9 ½ (14.87) at the Tiger Track Classic, which earned him a spot in the IC4A Champioships. At Princeton, freshman Steven Pierce (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) threw for a distance of 200-5 (61.09m) in the javelin to become a IC4A qualifier.
For the women, senior Leanna Nastase (Beaverdale, Pa./Forest Hills) and junior Christine Totten (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) have qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 10,000 with times of 37:24.01 and 37:24.45, respectively. Both times are rank second and third in the league. At the Shamrock Invitational senior Nina Reinhardt (Northport, N.Y./Northport) became a ECAC qualifier after her 4,581 point effort in the heptathlon, while junior Beverly Rogers Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) qualified by launching adistance in the javelin of 134-2 (40.89m). Reinhardt holds the best point total in the league.
