BRADENTON, Fla. - Bucknell's offense managed 12 runs on nine hits as the Bison baseball team upended Fairfield by a score of 12-3 on Tuesday afternoon at IMG Field. The win moves the Orange and Blue to 4-6 on the season, while the Stags drop to 1-5.
Bucknell struck first in the contest as the squad capitalized on two errors in the third. Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) reached on an error and senior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) drove him in with a single through the right side. Gryskevicz went on to score the second run of the inning on a double-steal play after moving to second on an error and to third on a wild pitch.
Freshman Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) singled and scored on an error in the fifth to bring the Bison advantage to 3-0. Then in the sixth, junior Ed Rubbo (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) knocked a leadoff single and, with two out, came home on an RBI single by freshman Ben Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata). Sophomore Dane Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) followed with another single and Yoder drove the pair in with a triple to right field.
Fairfield took two of the runs back in the top of the seventh as Jason Rago began the frame with a solo home run and Peter Allen accounted for the second, scoring on an error after reaching with a single. The Stags threatened to add more to that total, but senior Matt Curry (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) escaped any further damage by getting Albie DiSimone to ground out with the bases loaded.
The Orange and Blue then put the game out of reach with a six-run seventh inning. Rubbo drove in the first two with a double, while Allen, Gryskevicz and junior Mark Angelo (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown each added RBI as well.
The Stags managed to plate one more in the contest, scoring on a balk in the top of the eighth.
Curry picked up the win (1-3) for the Bison as he threw seven innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Rob Gariano started on the mound for Fairfield and took the loss (0-1). He surrendered six runs, three earned, on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
Yoder led Bucknell at the plate as he finished 3-for-4 in the contest with two runs scored and two RBI. Gryskevicz and Rubbo each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Grandizio scored two and Allen drove in two.
Bucknell will return to action tomorrow, March 14, in Bradenton, Fla., as the Bison will take on Northern Iowa in a 2:30 p.m. contest at IMG Field.
