REDLANDS, Calif. - The Bucknell women's water polo team completed a pair of sweeps on Monday night when it upended Redlands, the No. 1 team in Division III, 10-6. The Bison, who won a thrilling sudden-death overtime affair earlier in the day against Cal Baptist, swept the opening day of its spring break trip to California. Additionally, Bucknell (10-9) swept the two-game season series from Redlands, having beaten it last month.
Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) tallied three goals apiece, while Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) chipped in two goals and an assist. Rowe also tallied a team-high three assists.
Bucknell, which is 2-0 on its six-game spring break trip to move back above .500, outscored Redlands 6-2 after halftime to seal the victory.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) and Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) split time in goal with each making a pair of saves. Carter got the start, while Bynum relieved her in the second half.
The defense in front of the goalies was strong as the Bison totaled 15 steals after recording 16 earlier in the day against Cal Baptist. Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover) and Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell) paced Bucknell with three steals apiece.
The Bison are idle Tuesday, but return to action with a single game on Wednesday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the fourth-ranked Division III team in the nation, at 7 p.m.
