LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell varsity athletics teams continue to perform well in their quest for a 13th Patriot League Presidents' Cup, as a strong winter season across the board has given the Bison leads in the overall, men's and women's Cup standings as the spring season begins in earnest.
In the overall Presidents' Cup standings, Bucknell has 79.25 points, which is 17 points clear of second-place Navy (62.25). Army ranks third with 55.5 points, followed by Lehigh (54.5), American (54.25), Colgate (50.75), Lafayette (47.25) and Holy Cross (39.25).
Bucknell finished no lower than third in any of the six Patriot League-sponsored winter sports. The Bison captured their sixth consecutive Patriot League championship in women's indoor track and field, and they won regular-season titles in both men's and women's basketball. The men's indoor track and field team finished third, while the women's and men's swimming and diving teams placed second and third, respectively, at the Patriot League Championships.
Including fall championships in women's cross country and men's soccer Bucknell has now captured three Patriot League titles in 2006-07, with 10 more championships to be contested this spring.
Bucknell is also seeking its 13th Patriot League Women's Cup, and the Bison have an 8.25-point lead over Navy through the winter season. Bucknell has 44 points, followed by Navy (35.75), American (29.75), Colgate (29.25), Army (27.5), Lehigh (25.25), Lafayette (24) and Holy Cross (22.5).
In the Men's Cup standings, Bucknell leads with 35.25 points, followed by Lehigh (29.25), Army (28), Navy (26.5), American (24.5), Lafayette (23.25), Colgate (21.5) and Holy Cross (16.75). Bucknell has captured the men's all-sports championship four times, most recently in 2003-04.
Presidents' Cup points are awarded based on a team's performance in the regular-season and postseason PL standings. In cross country, football, golf, swimming & diving, track & field and women's rowing, the points are awarded based on the final team standings. In team sports with postseason tournaments, such as basketball, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse and volleyball, points are awarded based on the average of the league championship tournament and regular-season standings.
