PRINCETON, N.J. - Aiming for its third victory of the season over Maryland, the Bucknell women's water polo team fell to the Terrapins 8-6 in overtime Saturday at DeNunzio Pool. The Bison, who defeated Maryland 9-7 in overtime at the ECAC Championship last weekend, fell to 8-9 on the season and 0-2 in Southern Division play. The Terrapins, who play nationally ranked Princeton Saturday night, improved to 8-10 this year.
Bucknell had been 14-1 against Maryland all-time entering Saturday's contest.
Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) led the Bison with four goals and added one assist. The second-leading scorer on the team was counted on as leading scorer Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) failed to record a point for just the second time this season. It was also the third time she didn't net a goal, although she did pick up four ejections drawn to give her a team-high 48 on the campaign.
Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Susan Kingerski (Sugarland, Texas/Saint Agnes Academy) tallied one goal apiece to round out Bucknell's offensive attack, which managed only a 3-for-11 showing in six-on-five situations.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) played the first half in goal for the Bison and made five saves while yielding four goals. With the score tied 4-4 at halftime, head coach John Zeigler lifted Bynum for backup Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor), who came up one stop short of her career high with eight saves and held the Terps to one goal in each stanza the rest of the way.
The score was tied at six heading into overtime, but Maryland netted one goal in each of the two three-minute overtime periods.
Bucknell now embarks on a six-game road trip to California for spring break. The Bison open their West Coast slate Monday against Cal Baptist and Redlands.
