LEWISBURG, Pa - Bucknell University held its 21st National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration to help recognize the athletic achievement of women's sports and its athletes this past week. This year's theme was "Throw Like a Girl - Lead Like a Champion."
The event began on Feb. 8, with the National Girls and Women in Sports Luncheon sponsored by K.I.C.K.S Martial Arts for Women, the Bucknell Cheerleaders, Women Resource Center, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Patriot League. The luncheon program consisted of three guest speakers from Bucknell's administrators, faculty and staff: provost Mary DeCredico, who is an alumna and is the highest ranking woman administrator at Bucknell; Martin K. Ligare, who is the associate professor of physics; and Judy Mickanis, who serves as the director reservations and information and conference services.
DeCredico spoke about the changes in women's sports over the years and what role coaches, staff and athletes play in forming the Plan for Bucknell moving forward. Ligare talked about his observations regarding women's athletics at Bucknell, while Mickanis addressed her observation of female athletes seen here on the campus compared to her first days employed at Bucknell. Each speaker helped increase and recognize awareness about Bucknell women's intercollegiate athletics programs by remembering and honoring the past and looking forward to the future.
On Feb. 13, Bucknell held its National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration during the women's basketball game against Lafayette. Before the game, children were able get their face painted by the Bison cheerleaders. During the game, Bucknell held a Feed the Fan promotion courtesy of Domino's Pizza. At a media timeout, the Bucknell cross country squad was honored for winning its second-straight Patriot League Championship and sixth in school history this past fall.
At halftime, Bucknell recognized each of the Bison women's teams in attendance as well as the K.I.C.K.S Women's Sports Luncheon's monthly award winners with each athlete receiving congratulations from President and Mrs. Mitchell and Senior Woman Administrator Amanda Backus.
At the conclusion of the night, the Extreme Slam Dunk Team performed its routine in front of the crowd, followed by an autograph signing for the fans in attendance with each women's program represented.
