
Bucknell Wrestling Comes Up Short Against No. 19 Navy, 31-9

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) broke the program single season dual-meet wins record, but his victory wasn't enough to help the Bucknell wrestling squad past No. 19 Navy as the Bison fell to the Midshipmen, 31-9, in Halsey Field House on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Orange and Blue is now 10-9 on the year, 2-3 in the EIWA, while the Mids move to 10-4 and remain undefeated in the EIWA at 6-0.
Navy opened with a 3-0 lead after Alex Usztics defeated Greg Hart (Bedminster, N.J./Bernards), 11-4 in the 125-pound matchup. Then the Bison were able to tie the score at 3-3 as 133-pounder David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) upset No. 10 Joe Baker in come-from-behind fashion. With less than one minute remaining in the bout, Marble was awarded a stall point to narrow Baker's lead to 6-5. He then scored a takedown with 15 seconds remaining and picked up the riding time point to bring the final score to 8-6.
However, the Mids followed up with three straight victories, two coming for bonus points, to climb to a 15-3 advantage. Brad Canterbury recorded a 9-4 decision over Zach Galligan (Boonville, N.Y./Adirondack) at 141, John Cox logged a technical fall over Jack Conroy (Westport, Conn./Green Farms Academy), 15-0, 4:16 into the 149-pound bout, and John Jarred registered a 17-7 major decision against Brantley Hooks (Spartansburg, S.C./James F.Byrnes) at 157.
In the 165-pound matchup, Rendos notched his historic win in dramatic fashion with a 7-3 sudden victory decision after being knocked unconscious with 56 seconds remaining in regulation. After evening the score at two when Rendos was called for stalling, Justin Jacobs escaped with 11 seconds remaining in the third period to take a 3-2 lead, but the riding time point belonged to Rendos, sending the match to overtime. Rendos then secured his 17th win of the season with a takedown, followed by a two-point near fall as time expired. He is now 17-2 in duals on the year, 26-3 overall.
Navy extended its advantage to 21-6 as No. 11 Matt Stolpinski pinned Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) 2:20 into the bout between the 174-pounders and Antonio Miranda clinched the meet win for the Mids with a four-point technical fall over George Mann (Orange, Ohio/Orange), 26-11, in 6:50 at 184.
Eric Lapotsky (Mount Carmel, Pa./Mount Carmel) was responsible for the final three points for the Orange and Blue as he defeated Tyler Moyer, 7-4, in the 197-pound bout to move to 22-4 overall on the season, 16-2 in duals.
In the final bout, No. 8 Ed Prendergast pinned Bison heavyweight George Hingson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area), 2:51 into their matchup.
Bucknell will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 11, as the squad will take on Wagner in its final home meet of the season beginning at 1 p.m. in Davis Gym.
