Bison Tennis Hosts Bucknell Invitational This Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's tennis teams are set to host UConn, Quinnipiac, and NJIT this weekend for the Bucknell Invitational, Oct. 5 - 7. Last weekend, the men played at the UConn Invitational while the women welcomed five visiting teams for the Bucknell Invitational.

At the UConn Invitational Last Weekend for the Men -
- Bucknell's Flight 1 doubles team of senior Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day-Upper School) and freshman Anton Kovic (Montreal, Canada/Milton Academy - Mass.) made the final round, dropping the match, 8-6, to Ilan Shvartz and Youssef Fassi-Fehri of Stony Brook. On the weekend, the pair picked up wins against Mikkelson and Pease of Quinnipiac (8-6) in the first round, Chris Ujkic and Kirill Kasaynov of Sacred Heart (8-1) in the quarterfinal, and Gregory Marks and Peter Luck of Marist in the semifinal (8-2).
- Also in Flight 1 doubles, junior Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) and junior Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) made the semifinal round, but were defeated Shvartz and Fassi-Fehri of Stony Brook (8-2). Prior to the semifinal, Brenner and Sandburg picked up wins against Bruno and Terpilowski of Monmouth (8-6), Nazzerese and Syer of Sacred Heart (8-4), and Sessigesimi and Coley of Marist (8-5).
- In singles action, Sandburg led the Bison at Flight 2 singles, making the quarterfinal round. He had a bye in the first round, went on to defeat Robert Ferrante of Fairfield (4-6, 6-3, 10-7) in the next round, but dropped the quarterfinal match to Jared Dorfman of Rhode Island (3-6, 7-5, 10-7).
- Brenner advanced to the quarterfinal round of Flight 4 singles. He opened the weekend with a win against Nick Mazzerese of Sacred Heart (6-0, 6-1) in the first round, defeated Ian Terpilowski of Monmouth (6-2, 6-1) in the next round, but dropped his quarterfinal match to Greg Marks of Marist (6-3, 6-4).
The Bison Men in 2007 -
- Reibeisen tallied his 113th career win this past weekend at the UConn Invitational, to surpass 2006 graduate Asher Salam's all-time combined victories record. Reibeisen also has the all-time singles record at Bucknell (61), ahead of 1990 graduate Ed Hess' all-time singles victories record by one win. He is just one win shy of tying Salam's doubles record, set in 2006 (53 wins).
- Reibeisen holds a 4-4 singles record for the season, 2-3 while playing in Flight 1 and Sandburg holds a 4-2 singles record, 2-2 while playing Flight 2.
- Sophomore Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) has posted a 3-4 record in singles, 2-2 in Flight 3 this season. In Flight 4 singles, Brenner has gone 3-2 and holds a 4-4 overall singles record for the season.
- Freshman Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) has played Flight 5 and 6 singles this season. He has gone 1-1 in Flight 5, 3-1 in Flight 6 and 7-2 overall in singles play.
- In doubles, Brenner and Sandburg hold an 8-2 record on the season and a 5-2 record in Flight 1 play.
At the Bucknell Invitational Last Weekend for the Women -
- Junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) won the consolation bracket for Flight A singles. Gamboa defeated Carlin Erksine of Villanova (8-4) in the semifinal and then Ksenia Chernyshova of Fairleigh Dickinson (8-4) for the consolation title.
- After the first day of singles action, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) remained in the main draw of their flights, making the semifinal round. Dwojewski dropped her semifinal match in Flight B singles to Smaranda Stan of Buffalo (6-3, 7-6) and Baffa fell in the semifinal round of Flight C singles to Tina Jacob of Buffalo (6-0, 6-1).
- In Flight A doubles, sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) dropped the final round of the main draw to Denise Harjonto and Diana Popescu of Buffalo (8-5) on Sunday. To make the final, the pair defeated Jaclyn Williamson and Ashley Reed of Villanova in the semifinal round, 9-7.
The Bison Women in 2007 -
- Gamboa holds a 4-3 overall singles record on the season, 3-1 in Flight 1. Lucido and Varela have each gone 1-1 in Flight 1 singles. Lucido is 2-1 and Varela is 1-1 overall in singles this season.
- Bucknell has had three doubles teams play in the Flight 1 bracket this season. Lucido and Varela hold a record of 7-1 in Flight 1, 4-0 record in Flight 2, and 8-1 overall in doubles. Baffa and Dwojewski hold a 5-1 doubles record, 3-1 in Flight 1, while Gamboa and sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) have gone 3-4 overall and 3-2 in Flight 1.
Bison Honors in 2007 -
- On Oct. 3, Lucido was named Patriot League Player of the Month for women's tennis. To open her collegiate career, Lucido posted a 10-2 combined record in September. She went 2-1 in singles and 8-1 in doubles when paired with Varela.
- Reibeisen received an honorable mention for Patriot League Male Player of the Month on Oct. 3 for setting Bucknell all-time records for combined victories (113) and singles victories (61) after the UConn Invitational, Sept. 28-30.
Looking Ahead -
- Following the Bucknell Invitational, the Bison will prepare for the ITA Regionals, Oct. 18 - 20 in Princeton, N.J. for the men, and Oct. 19 - 21 in Norfolk, Va. for the women.
