Bucknell Women's Tennis Set For ITA Regionals

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team will finish the 2007 fall season this weekend at ITA Regionals in Norfolk, Va. The Bison had this past weekend off and most recently played at home in the second of two consecutive tournaments hosted by Bucknell. The first, Sept. 29 - 30, was a flighted tournament while the second, Oct. 5 - 7 followed a round robin format. This weekend's ITA Regionals will run Saturday, Oct. 20 - Sunday, Oct. 21.
Bison Tennis Notebook
At the Bucknell Round Robin Invitational, Oct. 5 - 7 -
- In Flight 2 singles, junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) had a win in the first round over Dasa Stainimorivic of NJIT (6-3, 7-5).
- Freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) picked up two wins in Flight 4 singles, over Amanda Petruzzi of Quinnipiac (6-3, 6-1) and Fanny Aizier of NJIT (6-2, 4-6, 10-3).
- Junior Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) had a win in the first round of Flight 7 singles against NJIT's Grace Bogdan (6-0, 6-0) and in the second round against Shawna Sarson of Quinnipiac (0-6, 7-5, 10-8).
- In Flight 8 singles, sophomore Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) also picked up two wins, over Quinnipiac's Nikki Adams (6-3, 6-3) and over teammate Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) (6-2, 5-7, 10-6).
- In doubles action, Sotak and sophomore Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) defeated Koike and Kasem of NJIT in the second round of Flight 3.
The Bison Women in 2007 -
- Gamboa holds a 5-5 overall singles record on the season, 3-1 in Flight 1 and 1-2 in Flight 2. Freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) has gone 1-1 in Flight 1 singles (3-3 overall) and Varela has gone 1-2 in Flight 1 singles (1-2 overall) this season.
- Bucknell has had three doubles teams play in the Flight 1 bracket this season. Lucido and sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) lead the way with a record of 3-1 in Flight 1, and 8-1 overall in doubles. Senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and Dwojewski hold a 5-4 doubles record, 3-1 in Flight 1, while Gamboa and sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) have gone 3-7 overall and 3-5 in Flight 1.
Bison Honors in 2007 -
- On Oct. 3, Lucido was named Patriot League Player of the Month for women's tennis. To open her collegiate career, Lucido posted a 10-2 combined record in September. She went 2-1 in singles and 8-1 in doubles when paired with Varela.
Looking Ahead -
- The ITA Regionals mark the end of the fall season for the Bison. Bucknell women's tennis will open the regular season, Jan. 25 - 27 with the Cornell Invitational.
