After a heart-breaking five game loss to American University in the semifinals of the Patriot League tournament last fall, the Bucknell volleyball team has set high aspirations for the 2006 season. Wednesday, the Bison completed their seventh day of preseason on the courts of Davis Gymnasium.
Working through three practices a day in the steamy conditions of Davis, head coach Cindy Opalski is pleased with the continuing progress of the team, commenting, "We have incredible depth and experience in nearly every position and I really like our energy and enthusiasm after the first week of practice."
On and off the court the Bison are striving to improve every aspect of a team which returned an impressive five out of six starting players from the 2005 season. Before most practices, the team completes speed work and jump-training with head strength and conditioning coach Jerry Shreck. On the court, the team is adapting to a faster paced offense through more effective serve receiving tactics and technique.
"We are trying to learn to sweat the small stuff right now and be more vigilant with the basics, hoping to transfer good technique into more practical application down the road. As the sessions progress we are developing more consistency and are doing a better job of transferring our talent into useable skills. But, we need to become more disciplined and communicate with our teammates better," said Opalski.
In order for this team of 12 returning players and five newcomers to find that discipline and communication, the team engages in regular bonding sessions off the court. Additionally, Opalski is requiring that each member of the team read The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player by John C. Maxwell to increase the mental game of a highly talented group of individuals.
For the last week, the senior class, responsible for 945 kills, 634 digs, and 84 service aces in 2005, has been the predominant role model for the underclassmen. "Our senior leadership has been tremendous thus far. The returnees are not only challenging themselves, but providing solid instruction and encouragement for a very talented and raw group of newcomers," said Opalski.
The Bison will complete seven more days of preseason before their first tournament at Fairfield University on August 25th.
