LEWISBURG, Pa. - On the heels of his history-making victory at the Patriot League Championship over the weekend, Bucknell junior golfer Charlie Waddell (Wilmette, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) has been named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week.
Waddell shot a 3-under-par 210 to become the first player in league history to repeat as individual golf champion. Waddell also won the title in 2005, becoming the first player from Bucknell to do so. His 10-stoke victory this weekend at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course also propelled Bucknell to the team title for the first time. The Bison edged nine-time champion Army by just two strokes in the second-closest championship in league history.
In the first round, Waddell ignored steady rain and chilly temperatures to shoot a 2-under 69. He followed it up with a 70 in the second round and a steady 71 to close the tournament. His two-putt par on the 54th hole clinched the victory for the Bison.
His 210 total was one shy of the tournament record, which he tied last year. It was also the lowest score in any of the four Patriot League Championships contested at Navy.
Waddell and the Bison have now qualified for the NCAA Regionals May 18-20 at one of three sites: Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., Sand Ridge Golf Club in Cleveland, Ohio, or Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. The finals are May 31 to June 3 at Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.
