LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team (7-10, 3-2 PL) will head to the Patriot League Tournament where it will be the number three seed among a pool of four teams, with Army as the first seed, Lehigh as the second and Colgate as number four, on Saturday. At last season's Tournament, the Bison made it all the way to the Championship match, but fell to Army, 4-0.
Wanting to avenge their two 2006 league losses, to Lehigh, 4-3, and Army, 7-0, the Bison will first be put up against Lehigh. If Bucknell wins, it will face the winner of the No. 1 Army versus No. 4 Colgate match-up.
In the No. 1 spot for the Bison will be senior Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder), who has compiled a 2006 Patriot League win-loss record of 3-2. Senior Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) is the frontrunner for the No. 2 singles spot, as she has seen action in all but one match at the position this season, compiling an overall season record of 6-8.
Freshman Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) should battle in the No. 3 spot, while classmate Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) will represent the Bison in No. 4.
The No. 5 spot could have either sophomore Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) or freshman JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) making an appearance for the Orange and Blue. Baffa has a compiled league record of 1-2, while Grossman has a combined No. 5 and 6 record of 1-3.
In No. 6 could be Grossman, or classmates Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) or Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). Both Card and Simonetti have seen limited action in the position, but could easily step in and put up a tough battle for the Bison.
In doubles, the pair of Brown and Gamboa will battle in the No. 1, with Mills and Baffa in the No. 2, while Globerman and Grossman will more than likely be appearing in the No. 3 spot.
The tournament is set to begin on Saturday, with each team playing one match, and conclude on Sunday, with the winners battling for the Patriot League title.
Also coming up in the tennis world, the Bucknell men, led by senior Asher Salam (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and sophomore Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day-Upper) are set to battle Lehigh on Thursday, in Bethlehem, Pa., before battling American on Friday, at the Bucknell tennis courts in Lewisburg, Pa. The Lehigh battle is set for 3 p.m., with the American match scheduled for 3 p.m. as well.
