EASTON, Pa. - Junior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) had a strong outing at the plate in game one, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, but the Bucknell baseball squad could not produce enough offense against Lafayette and fell in both games of Friday's doubleheader, 3-2 and 6-2. With the losses, the Bison sit even at 5-5 in the Patriot League and 14-19 overall, while the Leopards are now 17-15, 7-3 in the league.
In game one, Bucknell jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings. With two out in the first, back-to-back doubles by senior Kyle Walter (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) and Gryskevicz resulted in the first run of the contest for the Bison. Then in the third, Senior Brad Duvall (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) singled through the left side and later scored on an infield single by Gryskevicz.
Lafayette took one of the runs back in the fourth as Mike Raible led off with a walk, advanced to third on a single by Tom Hayes, and came home on a groundout by Chris Luick.
A Bison error proved costly in the bottom of the sixth. Raible drove a leadoff single up the middle and the next batter, Kevin Leasure, advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt. On the next play, Hayes reached on a fielder's choice and Raible moved to third on an error. Then Raible went on to score on a pickoff play.
The Leopards plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. James Conrad singled up the middle to open the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Roberts and crossed the plate on a two-out single by Ian Law.
Junior Matt Curry (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) pitched game one for Bucknell and took the loss (2-5) as he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Matt Revelle picked up the victory (4-2) for Lafayette. He pitched all seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Orange and Blue opened game two with a lead, as well, after scoring a run in the top of the fourth. Walter singled to left, stole second and came home on an error. However, the Leopards evened things up at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame as Tom Ambrosole reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a wild pitch.
Lafayette then put two on the board in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Frank Cortazar knocked a leadoff single through the left side and scored on a single to right by Tom Hayes. Tyler Zeronda later added the second run of the inning by coming home on a sacrifice fly by Ambrosole after reaching with a walk.
Bucknell cut its deficit to 3-2 with a run in the seventh as sophomore Chris Pieper (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber) tripled to left center with one out and senior Chris Brannan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) plated him with a single to right center.
That would be as close as the Bison would come, however, as the Leopards stretched their advantage to 6-2 with a three-run eighth.
Senior Jacob Moss (Fresno, Calif./San Joaquin Memorial) started for Bucknell and took the loss (3-2). Moss worked 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Classmate Ian Rainey (Littleton, Colo./Littleton) relieved him and let up three unearned runs on two hits in 2.1 innings with one walk and no strikeouts. Matt Kamine earned the win (3-2) for Lafayette, pitching seven innings and surrendering two runs, one earned, on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Jason Morytko relieved Kamine and recorded the save (1). Morytko pitched two scoreless innings and allowed two hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
The teams will return to action tomorrow, April 15, for the second doubleheader of the weekend series, with game one beginning at 1 p.m.
