BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lisa Sweeney and Kate Arico combined to shut out the Bucknell softball team for 15 innings as the Bison were swept in a doubleheader Monday afternoon at Kaufman Field by Lehigh, 3-0 and 1-0 in eight innings. Bucknell fell to 8-24 overall and 2-6 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks improved to 24-8 and 8-0 in league play as they won their 42nd consecutive regular season league contest.
In game one, Lehigh jumped out in front with two runs in the bottom of the second inning off Bucknell starter Meg Muirhead (3-8) (Glendale, Calif./Flintridge Academy). Kate Marvel, who was 3-for-4 in the game with three runs batted in, drove in a pair with a two-out single. She later tripled home the Mountain Hawks' only run as she knocked Muirhead out of the game one out into the fourth inning.
Muirhead pitched 3.1 innings and gave up all three runs, five hits and two walks before giving way to Meaghan Haley (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley). Haley allowed just two singles in her 2.2 innings of work. She also struck out two.
The Bison could not get any offense going as they had just three hits over the first six innings against Sweeney (15-3), who recorded her fifth shutout of the season and struck out 12 hitters.
Trying to duplicate its game one feat from Sunday where it came back from three runs down in the seventh inning, Bucknell loaded the bases with one out in the seventh on a pair of singles and a throwing error by Sweeney, but could not push a run across the plate.
Lauren Litts (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) led the way for the Bison in the opener with two hits.
Game two was a pitchers duel between Christie Wiest (2-8) (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) and Arico (7-3). Neither team managed a run in the first seven innings as the two teams went to extra innings for the second time in the four-game series.
Wiest, who gave up just six hits, one run and three walks while striking out six in 7.1 innings came away with the loss. Whitney Lowe led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center. She moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a sacrifice bunt before a bunt single by Lauren Hanley brought her home with the winning run.
Arico scattered seven Bison hits and struck out eight while recording her second shutout of the season.
Meghan Feller (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Notre Dame), who had a career-high three hits, and Lauren Wible (Dover, Pa./Dover), who ended a nine at-bat hitless streak with a pair of hits, combined for five of Bucknell's seven hits in the game.
The Bison will play a doubleheader for the third straight day Tuesday when they travel to State College, Pa., for a non-conference doubleheader with Penn State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live and free of charge on www.SportsJuice.com, which can be accessed through www.BucknellBison.com.
