FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Alex DeOteris (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) belted a two-run double in his first collegiate at-bat, but Bucknell dropped a 12-2 decision to Gonzaga in baseball action at Fresno State's Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic on Wednesday afternoon. The loss leaves the Bison with a 4-7 record on the year while the Bulldogs move to 12-9.
The teams played two scoreless innings before Gonzaga posted six runs in the third. Tyson Van Winkle reached on an error to begin the inning and Scott Campbell followed with a walk to bring Darin Holcomb to the plate. Holcomb hit a three-run homer and after two walks and a single, Ryan Wiegand drove in three more with a double to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead.
Gonzaga added two more runs on an RBI double by Carlson in the fourth. Then in the fifth, the Bulldogs plated four on RBI doubles by Holcomb and Jackson Brennan and a single by Wiegand to push the score to 12-0.
Bucknell broke up the shutout in the sixth as DeOteris drove in senior Chris Brannan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) and sophomore Austin Turban (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) who reached with back-to-back singles to begin the inning.
