KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Entering the seventh inning the Bucknell softball team trailed Binghamton 3-1 and had managed just two hits, but the Bison exploded for five runs on four hits to take a 6-3 lead and held on for a 6-4 victory over the Bearcats Wednesday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games. Bucknell, which plays Cleveland State Wednesday evening, improved to 3-2 on its 10-game trip to Florida.
Lauren Wible (Dover, Pa./Dover) got things started for the Bison when she laced a leadoff single into center in the seventh. Lauren Litts (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) followed with a hard single to right-center. Kris Devore (Washington, Pa./Trinity), who had one of Bucknell's two hits entering the final inning with an RBI single in the fourth, walked to load the bases.
After Erin Curatola (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) reached on a fielder's choice, the Bison comeback started in earnest when Cassie Lloyd (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) drew a bases-loaded walk that was the final batter Binghamton starter Meghan Quinn would face. Pinch hitter Meghan Feller (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Notre Dame) greeted reliever Katie Hansen with a chopper back to the circle that bounced off Hansen's glove and into short left field, scoring two runs, including the go-ahead tally.
Bucknell (3-12) managed two more runs in the inning. The first came when pinch hitter Michelle Danish (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to score pinch runner Kristin Frick (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) from third. Jennifer James (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) followed with another chopper back over Hansen's head to score Feller and make the score 6-3.
After allowing the potential winning run to reach base in the bottom of the seventh after Binghamton scored a run on an infield single by pinch hitter Jessica Whittaker, Meg Muirhead (1-4) got Sandy Meadows, who had already reached base three times in four plate appearances, to ground out to shortstop to end the game.
Quinn retired the first 10 Bucknell hitters she faced, but the Bison got on the board first with a run in the fourth inning when Devore hit a sharp single up the middle to score Ashley Carlson (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) from second. WIble, who had walked earlier in the inning was thrown out at third base on the play. The fourth inning was the only inning until the seventh in which the Bison did not go down in order.
After threatening in the fourth inning against Bucknell starter Meaghan Haley (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) by leaving the bases loaded after a single and three walks, Binghamton got on the board in the fifth against relievers Tanya Roth (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and Muirhead. Roth was charged with both runs the Bearcats scored in the fourth as she yielded three singles and a sacrifice bunt to the four hitters she faced. Muirhead, who picked up her first career win by pitching a solid 2.2 innings of relief, gave up an infield single and a walk, but got the final two outs in the inning.
Three of the Bearcats' four runs came on infield singles.
There were 16 total hits in the game - six by Bucknell and 10 by Binghamton - yet no player had more than one. Rose Barre led the Bearcats with a team-high two runs batted in, while Feller's two runs batted in paced the Bison.
Bucknell continues play at the Rebel Spring Games this evening against Cleveland State at 6 p.m. The Vikings are 5-1 through the first six games of their Florida trip.
