FRESNO, Calif. - The Bison brought the go-ahead run to the plate with two out in the ninth, but fell short of a rally as the Bucknell baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Fresno State at Pete Beiden Field on Sunday evening. With the loss, the Orange and Blue now sit at 3-5 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 13-8.
Fresno State got on the board first with a solo homer to right field by Christian Vitters in the second inning. The Bulldogs later added two more in the fifth as Brian Lapin scored on a ground out and Loren Storey came home on a sacrifice fly by Vitters.
Then with two out in the ninth, sophomore Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) singled, classmate Ed Rubbo (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) followed with a walk and junior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) singled to load the bases for senior Brad Duvall (Hampstead, Md./Hereford). Duvall knocked a single to center that plated Buursma, but Rubbo was thrown out at home attempting to add a second run for the Bison to end the game.
Junior Matt Curry (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) took the loss (0-3) for Bucknell as he pitched all eight innings and allowed three runs on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Eddie Romero tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just three hits to earn the victory (5-1) for the Bulldogs. Jason Breckley worked the ninth to pick up a save for Fresno State. He allowed one run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Gryskevicz hit 2-for-4 with a double in the contest for the Orange and the Blue, while Buursma, senior Chris Brannan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison), senior Chris Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) and Duvall contributed the other four hits for the Bison. Beau Mills and Danny Grubb both went 2-for-4 at the dish for the Bulldogs.
Bucknell returns to action tomorrow, Monday March 13, when the Bison begin play in Fresno State's Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic with a contest against Washington State at 4 p.m. EST.
