The blaring of my 5:45 a.m. alarm jolts me to my feet every Thursday morning. I gather my belongings and sprint down Vedder Hall's four flights of stairs to meet my awaiting teammates. Exchanging acknowledging nods, we silently make our way up to Berger Varsity Weight Room. Nothing initiates team bonding like a 6:30 a.m. lift.
The morning workouts were just one of my new experiences as a freshman softball player. I entered the program uncertain of the team's expectations; I soon found that I had become part of the hardest working, most supportive group of people I had ever met. As the fall season brought on new challenges, my teammates and coaches constantly pushed and encouraged me.
During the first home tournament of the fall season, my nerves took over. I was barely able to field a fly ball. Instead of giving up on me, every single one of my teammates offered encouraging words. My coaches would leave me in the game until I fixed my mistakes. They had confidence in my abilities when I did not, and their persistent support helped me improve my game play tremendously.
The spring season will offer an entirely new set of challenges and experiences for which I am fully prepared, thanks to my teammates and coaches. We are looking forward to a great season and hopefully a Patriot League Championship!
