LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Kristen Sydlowski (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) became the new Bison single season digs record holder as the Bucknell volleyball squad topped Colgate, 3-0, in its home regular season finale on Saturday evening in Davis Gym. The win moved the Orange and Blue to 18-10, 9-3 in the Patriot League, while the Raiders dropped to 13-14, 5-7 in league matches.
Sydlowski finished the contest with three service aces and a team-best 19 digs, bringing her season total to 544 to surpass the program mark of 528 set by Susie Teitsworth in 1995. Junior Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) led the attack for the Bison with 21 kills and hit .359 (21-7-39) with three service aces and nine digs. Senior Amanda Grossmann (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) followed with nine kills and hit .316 (9-3-19) with two blocks while classmates Sarah Groman (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) and Jennie Smith (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) contributed eight kills apiece. Smith added seven digs and three blocks, as well, and sophomore Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) chipped in with 50 assists.
Katrina Zawojski had a team-high 11 kills along with nine digs for Colgate, while Kelsea Loveless, Erin Kanetzke and Marybeth Maziarz each totaled eight kills. Jackie Adlam recorded 14 digs and Megan Fanta registered 37 assists.
Bucknell raced out to a 12-5 lead in game one and rolled to a 30-18 victory.
Then in game two, after trailing by as many as nine at 20-11, the Bison tallied three straight points to close the gap to six, prompting a timeout by the Raiders. Following the break, Colgate collected the next point to stretch its advantage back up to seven, but the Orange and Blue crept back to within four and eventually tied the score at 24 following a 4-0 run that ended with two service aces by Henderson. Moments later, with the score deadlocked at 30, Bucknell captured the win, 32-30, with a kill by Henderson and an attack error by the Raiders.
Colgate came out on top in game three, but was unable to pull ahead by more than four before the Bison managed to erase the deficit and go up for the first time in the frame at 17-16. The teams traded point-for-point for most of the remainder until Bucknell ultimately sealed the match victory with two kills by Groman, taking the final game, 31-29.
The Bison, who clinched a Patriot League tournament berth this weekend, will close out the regular season next weekend, Nov. 10-11, with road matches against American on Friday and versus Navy on Saturday, both at 7 p.m.
