HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) set a new career high with 23 kills as the Bucknell volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 win over Colgate in Patriot League action on Friday evening. With the victory, the Bison moved to 11-9, 3-2 in league play, while the Raiders leveled at 9-9, falling to 2-3 in the PL.
Henderson led the offensive effort for the Orange and Blue as she hit .340 (23-7-47) and added 10 digs and three block assists to go along with her 23 kills. Senior Sarah Groman (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) followed with 10 kills and hit .500 (10-1-18) with three block assists, while sophomore Emilie Hardinge (Darien, Conn./Darien) and senior Amanda Grossmann (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) contributed eight kills apiece, with Grossmann hitting .467 (8-1-15). Sophomore Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) aided the offense with 50 assists along with six digs, senior Kristen Sydlowski (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) compiled a match-best 20 digs and freshman Rachel Freeman (San Mateo, Calif./San Mateo) had 10 digs.
For Colgate, Katrina Zawojski was the only player to reach double figures in kills as she finished with 11 and completed her double-double with 11 digs. Kelsea Loveless recorded nine kills, Meghan Fanta tallied 28 assists and Jackie Adlam registered 14 digs.
In game one, the Bison used an early 9-0 run to climb to an 11-5 lead, which would hold for the remainder of the frame as Bucknell went up 1-0 in the match with a 30-24 win.
The Raiders battled in game two and managed to tie the score at 20, prompting a Bucknell timeout, which sparked a 10-5 stretch by the Orange and Blue for a 30-25 game two victory.
Then the Bison closed out the match in convincing fashion, never trailing after the first point on the way to a 30-21 decision in game three.
"We played with excellent energy and enthusiasm as a team," said head coach Cindy Opalski. "We came out tonight wanting to make a statement and we did so in resounding fashion. We made it clear that we were going to play at our pace and tempo and be aggressive offensively."
Bucknell will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 10, when the squad will play its first home match since Sept. 16, as the team will host Saint Francis, (Pa.) in a 7 p.m. contest on the court in Davis Gym.
