Bucknell Tennis to Begin Spring Season

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team will begin its fall season on Friday, Jan. 27 at the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y., and will conclude competition on Sunday, Jan. 29. Last season, the women finished second in the Patriot League behind Army.
Senior co-captains Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) and Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) will look to lead their team in the 2006 season. Brown, a two-time All-Patriot League selection and the league's Rookie of the Year in 2003, turned in a 2005 fall singles record of 4-7 and was one of the two Bison who qualified for the ITA Regionals. Mills, the 2004 team's most valuable player, compiled a fall singles record of 7-3.
Freshman Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) was the other Orange and Blue athlete to qualify and compete at the Regionals, along with Brown. Gamboa compiled a team best record of 9-4 during the fall season.
Other athletes to watch are sophomore Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and freshmen JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) and Ashley Globerman (New York City, N.Y./Clarkstown).
After the Invitational, Bucknell will return home on Feb. 11, to host Quinnipiac in the first dual match of the season, scheduled to begin at noon.
