Bucknell Volleyball Romps Morgan State, 3-0 in Home Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Jenna Henderson hit .609 and tallied 16 kills as the Bucknell volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Morgan State in the Bison's 2005 home opener on Tuesday night. Bucknell improved to 3-1 with the win while the Bears remained winless at 0-4.
Game one was evenly fought from the outset, as the Bison were unable to gain more than a three-point advantage over Morgan as the score stood at 12-10 midway through. However, Bucknell was able to pull away with a 16-2 run that began with back-to-back service aces by junior Kristen Sydlowski and outhit the Bears .306 to .034 to take the game by a 30-14 margin.
Another string of consecutive service aces helped the Bison take game two as well. With the score tied at 15, senior Jessica Le began a rally for Bucknell with three straight aces as the Bison outscored Morgan state, 15-6 to close out the game and take game two, 30-20.
Bucknell's offense played a virtually flawless third game, hitting .400 as a team and committing no errors. While the score was tied several times, the Bison never trailed and closed out the match winning game three, 30-21.
Behind Henderson's 16 kills, Sydlowski and Jennie Smith followed with six apiece, while Sydlowski also added three aces and 11 digs. Senior Chelsea Anderson headed up the Bucknell defense with a match-high 14 digs and Le and Shannon Pitsch tallied 16 and 13 assists, respectively.
As for the Bears, Esther Johnson led the squad with 11 kills, Ashley Preston posted 13 digs and Sharleen Browne registered 25 assists.
The Bison next travel to Stony Brook, N.Y., for the Stony Brook Classic on Friday, Sept. 9, when the squad will take on St. Francis (Pa.) in its opening match of the tournament at 5 p.m.
