Bucknell Volleyball Begins Weekend with 3-1 Setback Against Army

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell volleyball team came away with game one, but could not hold on as the team fell to Army, 3-1, on the court of Davis Gym on Friday evening. With the loss, the Bison dropped to 9-6 overall, with a 1-2 mark in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights improved to 10-2 (3-0 PL) and have posted wins in their last six matches.
Game one was tightly played from beginning to end with neither team pulling more than four points ahead at any time. Bucknell came away with the 31-29 victory in the frame after collecting the final three points on back-to-back kills by junior Kristen Sydlowski (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and an Army attack error. Game two played out in a similar fashion with neither team managing to pull away with a large lead, but with score tied at 28, Lauren Teal closed out the game with two service aces, giving the Black Knights a 30-28 win. Army took sizable leads early in games three and four and clinched the match victory by winning the final two games 30-21 and 30-20.
Sydlowski totaled a team-best 14 kills for the Bison along with 13 digs. Sophomore Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) followed with 13 kills and 13 digs, while junior Jennie Smith (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) recorded 11 kills. Senior Chelsea Anderson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) posted a match best 20 digs and setters Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) and Jessica Le (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) contributed 28 and 20 assists, respectively.
Danielle Cooper and Elizabeth Lazzari led the Black Knights with 14 kills apiece and registered hitting percentages of .520 and.320, while Lazzari also added 12 digs. Eileen Cassidy tallied 13 kills and 11 digs, Mandy Kimbrell had a team-high 16 digs and Mimi Yu chipped in with 10 digs. Setter Abby Casciato aided the offense with 50 assists.
Bucknell returns to action tomorrow, Oct. 1, when the team will play host to Holy Cross in a Patriot League match slated for 6 p.m.
