Bucknell Volleyball Sweeps on Day Two of La Salle Tournament

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bucknell volleyball team came away with two victories on day two of the La Salle Tournament, defeating Providence, 3-0, and La Salle 3-1. With the pair of wins, the Bison moved their record to 2-1 on the year while the Friars fell to 0-3 and the Explorers dropped to 4-1.
In the first match of the day, Bucknell took three straight games from Providence by the scores of 30-12, 30-28 and 30-23. Sophomore Jenna Henderson posted a match-best 12 kills and hit .429 (12-3-21) while also recording eight digs. Junior Sarah Groman followed with 11 kills and hit .471 (11-3-17). Over three matches in the tournament, Groman averaged 3.55 kills per game and hit .412 to earn a spot on the All-Tournament squad.
Senior Chelsea Anderson contributed six service aces in the Bison's victory over the Friars, while freshman Shannon Pitsch and senior Jessica Le tallied 22 and 18 assists, respectively. Le also helped lead Bucknell defensively as she recorded 12 digs and junior Kristen Sydlowski totaled 11 digs.
In the match, the Bison outhit Providence .327 to .167. Cadres Aida led the Friars with 11 kills, Amanda Little posted 16 digs and Annie Fiorvanti added 10 assists.
Bucknell took games one, two and four against La Salle by the scores of 30-24, 30-21 and 30-27 to record its second victory of the day. The Explorers narrowly took game three by a 30-28 margin.
Henderson once again led the Bison offense, tallying 16 kills while also registering four service aces and 11 digs. Groman totaled 15 kills in the match and hit .435 (15-5-23) with two aces and five block assists. Sydlowski chipped in with 11 kills and 15 digs, while Anderson contributed a match-high 25 digs. Le compiled 30 assists and Pitsch posted 21 helpers in the win.
Christa Dominick led La Salle's offense with 15 kills and hit .462 (15-3-26). Abby Mean was the only other Explorer to reach double-digits in kills with 10. Carolyn Judge tallied 24 digs for La Salle and Caitlin Conner had a match-best 47 assists.
The Bison return to Lewisburg to make their 2005 home debut with a match against Morgan State on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. in Davis Gym.
