Bucknell Volleyball Outlasts Navy, 3-2

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell volleyball team outlasted Navy, picking up a 3-2 victory on Saturday night on the court in Macdonough Hall. With the win, the Bison improved to 1-1 in the Patriot League, 8-5 overall, while the Midshipmen slid to 8-4, 1-1 in league action.
Bucknell took games one, three and five by the scores of 30-25, 30-22, and 15-10 to pick up its first Patriot League victory of the season. The Bison fell by the narrowest of margins in games two and four, 31-29 and 30-28, respectively.
Sophomore Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) headed up Bucknell's offense with 20 kills and hit .308 (20-8-39) for the match while also contributing 10 digs. Junior Jennie Smith (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) followed with 13 kills and hit .440 (13-2-25) with three service aces. Classmate Sarah Groman (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) added 10 kills and setters Jessica Le (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) tallied 26 and 17 assists, respectively. Junior Kristen Sydlowski (Bethlehem, Pa.) had a match-best 16 digs along with four service aces and four block assists, while senior Chelsea Anderson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) totaled 15 digs.
The Bison came away with the victory despite being outhit in the match, .198 to .185. As a team, Bucknell's best hitting performance came in game five when the squad hit .471 against Navy's .095 to seal the victory.
Beth McArthur led the Midshipmen with 17 kills and also recorded 12 digs. Setter Ashley Musser pitched in with 27 assists, 13 kills and five blocks, while Kim Koss added 17 assists. Defensively for Navy, Jessie Sims led the squad with 15 digs.
Bucknell next travels to Loretto, Pa., to take on Saint Francis in a non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.
