Bucknell Volleyball Rallies Past Coppin State, 3-1

LEWISBURG, Pa. - After falling in game one, 30-24, the Bucknell volleyball team rallied back with wins in games two, three and four to defeat Coppin State, 3-1, on day one of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison took their three games by the scores of 30-20, 30-20 and 30-25 and improved to 6-3 on the season with a 3-0 mark at home. The Eagles dropped to 0-6 on the year with tonight's loss.
After a slow start to game one where Bucknell hit just .114 as a team, the Bison rebounded in games two and three by hitting .343 and .344 as a squad. Senior Becky Fisher led the offense with 11 kills and hit .588 (11-1-17), while junior Sarah Groman and classmate Jennie Smith each tallied 10 kills. Groman also hit .421 (10-2-19) for the match with five blocks and Smith added eight blocks.
In addition to recording 19 assists, senior setter Jessica Le totaled 13 digs on the evening. Junior Kristen Sydlowski posted a match-high 13 digs as well, and freshman Shannon Pitsch contributed 25 assists and six digs in the victory.
Brittany Arvin tallied a match-high 16 kills for Coppin State and hit .414. Shauniece Steward and Jasmine Howard followed with 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Steward led the Eagles defensively with 12 digs, George recorded 10 digs and Andrea McGant chipped in with 11 digs. Setters Krystal Williams and Grace Lyon finished the night with 21 assists apiece.
In other action on day one of the Bison Invitational, St. John's defeated Canisius by a 3-0 margin. The tournament continues tomorrow, Sept. 17., with St. John's vs. Coppin State at 10 a.m., Canisius vs. Bucknell at 12 p.m., Coppin State vs. Canisius at 2 p.m., and St. John's vs. Bucknell at 4:30 p.m.
