LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell volleyball team improved to 2-0 at home this season as the Bison blanked St. Francis (N.Y.), 3-0, taking the three games by the scores of 30-9, 30-15 and 30-17. The win moved Bucknell to 5-3 on the year, while the Terriers remained winless at 0-8.
From the outset, the Bison dominated play as the team opened the match with a 9-0 run in which freshman setter Shannon Pitsch tallied two of her four total service aces. Bucknell hit .407 as a team in the opening game with no attack errors.
Game two began with the score tied at one, but that would be as close as the Terriers would get as the Bison slowly but surely pulled away in the frame. Junior Sarah Groman capped off the Bison's first run that stretched team's lead to 10-4 with two of her three kills of the game. In the match, Groman recorded a team-high seven kills and posted six total blocks.
The Terriers held a 6-9 advantage in the third game, but Bucknell stormed back and outscored St. Francis by a 24-8 margin the rest of the way to take game three and secure the match victory. Senior Chelsea Anderson headed up the Bison defense with a total of 17 digs and also contributed two service aces. Junior Kristen Sydlowski registered 11 digs, while Amanda Grossman tallied five kills and Pitsch added 17 assists.
Esther Lima totaled six kills to lead the Terriers' offense and posted nine digs as well. Lydia Ann Harris recorded five kills and six digs, while Megan Lundquist chipped in with nine assists and 11 digs.
The Bison will play host to the Bucknell Invitational on Friday, Sept. 16, and Saturday, Sept. 17., and will next face Coppin State on Friday at 8:30 p.m. The tournament will open with a 6 p.m. match between St. John's and Canisius.
