PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bucknell women's rowing team opened competition on the Schuylkill River at the Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, Friday and advanced three of its four boats to Saturday's semifinals. The Bison had their varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight crews earn spots in the semifinal races.
The varsity four of coxswain-Jessica Scott, 4-Susan Shadle, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Jennifer Prunoske and 1-Courtney Luzzi, which posted a pair of first-place finishes at the home regatta two weeks ago, kept its streak alive with a first-place showing Friday. The Bison, who completed the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 51.53 seconds, crossed the line nearly 10 seconds ahead of second-place Georgia State (8:01.25). The top two teams in the heat advanced to the semifinals Saturday. Vermont (8:10.39), Drake (8:15.03), Clemson (8:18.21) and Army (8:22.3) rounded out the six-boat field.
With a time of 7:47.28, the Bucknell novice eight of coxswain-Hope Heffner, 8-Ariel Farrar-Wellman, 7-Amanda Gallina, 6-Katherine Brewster-Duffy, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Jayne Kubat, 2-Jessica Glenn and 1-Sophie Bird also advanced to the semifinals with a second-place finish. The top three teams earned berths in the semifinals. Buffalo, which finished first in 7:36.19, and Tulsa, which claimed third in 7:55.12, will join Bucknell in the semifinals. Marquette, Georgia Tech and William & Mary completed the six-team field.
The varsity eight needed to race twice, but still earned a spot in the semifinals. After finishing third in the heats, the boat of coxswain-Coral Swartz, 8-Danielle Monteverde, 7-Jenna Kotyk, 6-Alexis Will, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Lauren Ewald, 3-Kara Schroepfer, 2-Lauren Olsen and 1-Erin Henry came back to place second in the repechage. The top three teams in the repechage earned semifinal berths. The Bison completed the tight race in 6:52.98 during the heats to finish just 4.45 seconds behind winner Drexel. Vermont came in second at 6:49.22. Bucknell did best out Patriot League-foe Lehigh, which finished fourth with a time of 7:05.15. The Bison took second in the repechage with a time of 7:17.33, less than one second behind West Virginia's 7:16.35. Ohio State (7:24.2) rounded out the trio of teams advancing to the semifinals. Penn State (7:30.12), Wichita State (7:43.41) and Michigan State (8:08.63) rounded out the six-team field.
Bucknell's only boat not to make the semifinals in its respective race was the novice four of coxswain-Antoinette Klatzky, 4-Colleen McKeown, 3-Kimin Fox, 2-Gillian Young and 1-Lauren Bolcar. However, the squad had a solid third-place showing with a time of 8:19.43. That was not enough as only the top two teams earned berths in the semifinals. Washington University (7:42.07) and Pittsburgh (7:45.78) claimed first and second. John Carroll (8:23.78) and Michigan State (8:44.66) took fourth and fifth in the five-team race. Washington and Pittsburgh went on to finish one-two in the finals Saturday. There were a total of 50 boats in the novice four classification.
