TOWSON, Md. - Lisa Vaccaro pitched her first shutout of the season and Megan Good had two hits as the Bucknell softball team ended Towson's 10-game winning streak with a 3-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers defeated the Bison 8-0 in five innings in the first game of the twinbill.
Vaccaro (2-4) scattered five hits and three walks over her seven innings of work to pick up the second shutout of her career. She allowed only Katie Mumbauer, who led off both the first and third innings with singles, to reach third base. Mumbauer led the third inning off with a single, but advanced only as far as third after back-to-back groundouts.
Vaccaro helped Bucknell (5-12) end a seven-game losing streak, while handing Towson (18-12) its first home loss of the season (9-1 at home).
The Bison scored all the runs they would need in the second and third innings off starter Korey McKenney and reliever Claire Rietmann-Grout. Good led off the second inning with a double and advanced to third on a two-out passed ball. After Jennifer James, who was playing the outfield for the first time this year, walked, Erin Curatola lined a single to right-center field for her fourth run batted in this season.
Kris Devore roped a leadoff double in the third that chased McKenney from the game. After Megan Fink grounded out to advance Devore to third, Lauren Wible, who was 3-for-5 in the doubleheader to raise her average to .479, hit an RBI single to score Devore for the first run of the inning. Later in the frame Good smacked a two-out RBI single to right field off Rietmann-Grout to score Wible for the final run of the game for Bucknell.
Five of Bucknell's six hits in the game came in the second and third innings. After the Bison touched McKenney and Rietmann-Grout for three runs on five hits in the first four innings, Jillian Kiley entered the game and allowed just one base runner and struck out six hitters over the final three innings.
The Tigers dominated the first game, which lasted just five innings due to Towson leading by eight runs at that time. Tiger starter Jessica Fisher (9-4) won her sixth straight decision and recorded her fourth shutout of the season by limiting the Bison to just four hits while striking out five batters. Bucknell's best chance to score came in the fourth inning when Wible and Lauren Litts led off the stanza with back-to-back singles. However, Fisher retired the next three batters in order to end the rally.
Christie Wiest (2-4) drew the start for the Bison, but lasted just two innings and gave up five earned runs and seven hits, while striking out just two hitters. All five of those runs came in the second inning when Towson tallied six of its 11 hits, including five consecutive after the first out was recorded. The big blow was a bases-loaded 3 RBI triple by Jenny Edwards.
Wiest was relieved at the beginning of the third inning by Julie Williams. The junior yielded a one-out two-run home run to Aimee Rosa, the third of the year for the freshman.
After each of the first three batters reached base in the fourth inning, one on a dropped third strike, Williams worked out of the jam. She couldn't do the same in the fifth inning when Towson clinched its 10th straight win with a two-out single to right field by Angie Hess.
Good, who was 3-for-4, and Wible were the only two Bucknell players with more than one hit in the doubleheader.
The Bison return to Patriot League play this weekend when they travel to West Point, N.Y., for two doubleheaders with Army. The first game Saturday begins at 4:30 p.m., while Sunday's action is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
