Bucknell Women's Water Polo Ends Nine-Game California Trip with Two Wins

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Bucknell women's water polo team closed its nine-game road trip to California with a pair of wins over ranked Division III teams Sunday. The Bison, who were led by six goals and three assists from Meg Blitzer, defeated No. 3 Whittier 8-4 and No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer 8-3.
Bucknell, which at 15-7 is one win shy of equaling last year's victory total, and just three short of tying the program record of 18, jumped out to an early lead in both games and held on for victory in each.
The Bison built a 4-1 halftime lead against Whittier in the opener and jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead against Pomona-Pitzer before piling on five goals in the third quarter to take a 7-1 lead into the fourth quarter.
Blitzer and Cody Keffer led the way in both games. Blitzer scored three goals in each game to bring her season total to 40. Keffer netted a pair of goals in each game. Meagan Gins scored two goals against Pomona-Pitzer to round out the list of multiple-goal scorers in the two games for Bucknell.
Mandy Bynum started both games in goal and played six of the eight quarters. She made four saves against Whittier in the first half, before she tallying five while playing the whole game versus Pomona-Pitzer. She also recorded two assists and one steal in the nightcap. Katie Colgan played the second half opposite Whiiter and made two saves while allowing three goals.
By outscoring its opponents 16-7 Sunday, Bucknell increased its average scoring advantage over its opponents to 8.1-5.5 through 22 games this season.
The Bison will be idle next weekend as they take time off to prepare for the ECAC Championships, which will be held April 2 and 3 at Kinney Natatorium.
