Bucknell Women's Water Polo Ends Losing Streak with Two Wins Saturday

CLAREMONT, Calif. - After losing six consecutive games to ranked opponents, the Bucknell women's water polo team got back on the winning track Saturday during the first day of the Claremont Convergence with a pair of victories. The Bison opened the day beating the top-ranked team in Division III, Redlands, 10-5. They then won their second game of the day by a 7-4 margin over Cal-State San Bernadino.
With the two victories Bucknell improved to 13-7 this season. The Bison are just three wins away from equaling last year's victory total of 16.
Meagan Gins and Katie Hartigan were the offensive stars in the first game, scoring three times each as Bucknell used a four-goal fourth quarter to widen its lead. Amanda Nogic added a pair of goals, while Meg Blitzer and Elizabeth Jensen registered one each. Eight different Bison also tallied assists, with Cody Keffer leading with two.
Mandy Bynum, who made eight saves in the nightcap victory, stopped six shots against Redlands. She now has 135 saves this season and 414 for her career.
In the win against Cal-State San Bernadino, Bucknell jumped out to an early lead, putting three goals on the board in the first quarter. The Bison led 4-1 at halftime and 6-2 after three quarters before cruising to their second straight victory.
Gins continued her solid day by scoring two more goals to bring her daily total to five. Keffer, Jessica Trimis, Hartigan, Blitzer and Nogic each scored one goal. With four points Saturday, Blitzer increased her career total to 235. That figure, which ranks second in Bucknell history, is just 22 behind Adrienne Schober's record.
Bucknell completes play at the two-day Claremont Convergence Sunday with games against Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer.
