LEWISBURG, Pa. - Behind six goals from Meagan Gins, and four scores from Katie Hartigan, the Bucknell women's water polo team defeated George Washington 12-8 at Kinney Natatorium Friday night. The game was the first of the three-day Bucknell Invitational during which the Bison will play five games.
The win improved Bucknell's record to 4-1 which is the third time it has started a season with that many wins in its first five games. The best-ever start for the Bison came in 2001 when they opened the campaign 5-1.
Bucknell and George Washington alternated goals in the first quarter, with the Bison holding a 3-2 advantage at the end of the period thanks to the first goal of the game from Gins with 30 seconds left in the stanza. That was the first of seven consecutive goals for Bucknell as it built a 9-2 lead early in the third quarter. However, after holding the Colonials scoreless for more than 11 minutes, the Bison defense gave up three goals to George Washington within a two-minute span as the Colonials narrowed the gap to 9-5 with 1:37 to play in the third quarter.
Each team proceeded to score three goals apiece the rest of the way, but George Washington did make it interesting, drawing within three goals (11-8) with 4:14 to play.
Gins, just a freshman, eclipsed Meg Blitzer's team-high of five goals in a game this year with her six-goal outburst. Her 13 goals this season leads the team. Hartigan scored one goal in each period for her tally of four. She now has 98 career points to her credit. She also recorded a pair of steals against George Washington.
Blitzer and Elizabeth Jensen added the other goals for Bucknell, which is averaging more than nine goals per game. Cody Keffer, Jessica Trimis, Ashley Aiken, Blitzer and Amanda Nogic each registered one assist to help the winning cause.
Mandy Bynum made eight saves in goal for Bucknell.
The Bison will play two games Saturday. They host No. 14 Hartwick at 2 p.m., while they will take on Slippery Rock at 9 p.m. They return to the water Sunday with games against Wagner (10 a.m.) and Marist (3 p.m.).
