Bucknell Volleyball Outlasts Colgate, 3-2

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Bucknell volleyball team had four players reach double figures in kills as the squad rallied to defeat Colgate, 3-2. With the victory, the Bison improved to 17-13 overall and 9-5 in the Patriot League while the Raiders dropped to 7-20 overall and 6-8 in League play.
In game one, Bucknell trailed 13-8, but quickly gained a 23-17 advantage with a 15-4 run. The Bison went on to win the game by a 30-21 margin behind a team hitting percentage of .350 with just three errors in 40 attempts. Then in game two with the score tied at 27, two kills by Katrina Zawojski and a Bucknell attack error sealed the 30-27 victory for Colgate. The Raiders took game three by the same score. The Bison responded, however, by jumping out to a 14-7 lead in game four on their way to a 30-17 win. This forced a game five which Bucknell captured by a 16-14 margin to clinch the match victory.
Junior Sarah Groman (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) and sophomore Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) led the attack for the Bison with 16 kills apiece. Groman added a match-best seven blocks and hit .481 with only three errors in 27 attempts and Henderson contributed four service aces and 16 digs. Junior Jennie Smith (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) recorded 14 kills and six blocks while classmate Amanda Grossmann (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) had 13 kills and hit .385 (13-3-26) with five blocks.
Defensively for the Orange and Blue, senior Chelsea Anderson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) posted a team-best 25 digs and junior Kristen Sydlowski (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) followed with 22 digs. Setters Jessica Le (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) compiled totals of 14 digs and 12 digs while aiding the offense with 18 and 38 assists, respectively.
Zawojski had a match-best 27 kills to go along with 20 digs for Colgate. Erin Kanetzke registered 12 kills and Sheila Giovannini chipped in with 10 kills. Allie Nichols added 46 assists and 11 digs while Jackie Adlam finished with a team-leading 31 digs.
Bucknell will next travel to Washington, D.C., on Friday, Nov. 18, for the Patriot League Tournament where the team be the No. 4 seed and will face No. 1 seed American in a 6 p.m. match.
