LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell volleyball team took an 11-1 lead to open game one and never looked back as the Bison downed Lehigh by a 3-0 margin at home on Tuesday night. With the win, Bucknell improved to 11-6 overall, 3-2 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks slid to 3-13 (0-5 PL) with the loss.
Bucknell dominated the match as the team outhit Lehigh .378 to .051 and led in blocks, 16-0. Junior Jennie Smith (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) helped the Bison gain momentum early as she totaled seven kills on 10 attempts with no errors, hitting .700 in game one. Smith finished the match with 10 kills, six blocks and a .474 hitting percentage (10-1-19). Senior Chelsea Anderson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) contributed four service aces, with three coming in game one, and tallied a match-high 13 digs.
Junior Sarah Groman (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) posted seven kills and hit .500 (7-0-14) with three blocks for Bucknell, while classmate Kristen Sydlowski (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) recorded seven kills, six digs, three service aces and hit .316. Senior setter Jessica Le (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) added 18 assists and freshman Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) aided the offense with 15 assists in the victory.
Michelle Schwendenmann had a team-high nine kills for the Mountain Hawks. Morgan Volkart and Nikky Barnes followed with eight kills apiece, while Cassidy Maumus led Lehigh with 11 digs and Tory Marion registered eight digs and 27 assists.
The Bison return to the court in Davis Gym on Friday, Oct. 7, to play host to Patriot League foe Lafayette at 7 p.m.
