LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell volleyball team erased an 11-point deficit in game three, but could not force a game four and suffered a 3-0 loss to American on Senior Night in Davis Gym this Saturday evening. The setback dropped the Bison to 5-4 in the Patriot League and 13-11 overall, while the Eagles moved to 17-8, 9-1 in league action.
Bucknell took a 2-0 lead in game one, but American quickly tied the score and built a 21-7 advantage before cruising to a 30-17 victory to open the match. In game two, the Bison trailed from the outset as the Eagles hit .455 on their way to a 30-18 win. Then in game three, Bucknell made a push towards a game four as the squad came from down 20-9 to be within a point of American at 23-22. However, that would be as close as the Blue and Orange would get as the Eagles clinched the match by taking the game, 30-25.
Junior Kristen Sydlowski (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) tallied a match-best 10 digs and led the Bison in kills with six along with classmate Jennie Smith (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) who posted six kills and eight digs. Sophomores Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) and Tessa Mendez (Denver, Colo./Colorado Academy) followed with five kills apiece, while Mendez hit a team-best .625 (5-0-8) on her way to career highs in kills and hitting percentage. Freshman Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) registered 13 assists and seven digs while senior Jessica Le (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) added 13 assists.
Cutrina Biddulph recorded 15 kills to lead the Eagles and Rubena Sukaj chipped in with 14 kills. Jennifer Cosco contributed seven digs while setter Christina Nash had 31 assists and five digs in the victory.
Bucknell next travels to Holy Cross on Friday, Oct. 28, for a Patriot League match beginning at 7 p.m.
