LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite opening game three with a 9-2 advantage, Bucknell could not manage a comeback and fell to Navy, 3-0, in Patriot League volleyball action on Friday evening. With the loss, the Bison slid to 13-10 overall and 5-3 in league play. The win moved the Midshipmen to 6-3 in the league and 15-6 overall on the year.
Bucknell opened game one with a 2-0 lead but would trail the rest of the match after Navy tied the score at two and went on to take game one by a 30-25 margin. In game two, the Bison fell behind early then managed to erase a five-point deficit to tie the score at 14. However, that was as close as the Blue and Orange would get as the Mids captured a 30-21 game two victory. Then in game three, Bucknell came out with a charge and built a 9-2 advantage with the help of two service aces by freshman Sheena Czipri (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) and several Navy attack errors, but could not hold on as the Midshipmen clinched the match with a 30-23 win.
Sophomore Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) led the Bison offensively with eight kills and also added six digs. Junior Amanda Grosssmann (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) followed with six kills while classmate Jennie Smith (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) totaled five kills and two block assists. Junior Kristen Sydlowski (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) headed up the Bison defense with 16 digs and Czipri added seven digs. Setters Jessica Le (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) registered 13 and 12 assists, respectively.
Ashley Musser and Megan Boyd posted a match-high 10 kills apiece for Navy. Boyd also contributed six blocks and hit .400 on the night while Musser chipped in a team-best 24 assists. Jessie Sims recorded 16 digs and two blocks and Kim Koss had 17 assists in the win for the Mids.
Bucknell returns to action tomorrow, Oct. 22, when the team will play host to American University in a Patriot League match slated for 7 p.m.
