LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell cruised to a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League volleyball action on the court in Davis Gym Saturday evening. The Bison improved their overall record to 10-6 with the victory and are now 2-2 in league play. The loss dropped the Crusaders to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League.
In game one, Bucknell wasted no time as the team opened with a 10-4 lead and would hold off Holy Cross on the way to a 30-22 victory. The Bison did the same in game two and, during one stretch, tallied seven-straight points to climb to a 17-8 lead and took the game by a 30-20 margin. Game three was relatively close throughout with the Crusaders managing to stay within six points of Bucknell throughout the frame, but eight hitting errors proved costly for Holy Cross as the Bison hit .517 with just one error and clinched the match victory with a 30-23 win.
Bucknell saw a true team effort offensively as 11 players contributed kills. Junior Sarah Groman (Hollister, Calif./San Benito), classmate Kristen Sydlowski (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and sophomore Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) each tallied eight kills to lead the Bison. Groman also registered four block assists while Sydlowski recorded two service aces. Senior setter Jessica Le (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) chipped in with 23 assists and freshman Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) added 13 helpers. Senior Chelsea Anderson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) totaled a match-best 18 digs, while Sydlowski and Henderson followed with seven digs apiece.
Christine Strawson posted a team-high 10 kills for Holy Cross to go along with nine digs, while Valerie Mora pitched in with seven kills and 10 digs. Caitlin O'Callaghan tallied 10 digs as well and Chrissy Fanning contributed 27 assists for the Crusaders.
Bucknell continues its home stand with a match against Patriot League foe Lehigh on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
