Bison Women Run Away with Team Title at Bucknell Heptagonal

The Bison men finished fifth in the Bucknell Heptagonal field tallying 69 points, Saturday at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Rider University took the team title with a total of 164.50. Rob Gradoville was the highest place winner on the men's side, snagging second in the pole vault clearing a height of 13'9 ¼". Derrin Pierret also nabbed second place honors clocking 2:32.67 in the 1000.
Tyler Palumbo grabbed a third place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 43'10 ½". Jake Meyer was another third place finisher tossing 45'11 ¾" in the shot put. Mike Mellas jumped a mark of 21'11 ½" in the long jump, also good for third place. A pair of Bison came away with fourth place finishes; Koran Evans in the 800 (1:58.28) and Kevin Fortkiewicz in the 5000 (14:56.42).
Bucknell's 4x800 team of Adam Syty, Chris Petillo, Pierret and James Redmond took another fourth place finish with a time of 8:01.14. Matt Johnson clocked a time of 7.22 in the 60 dash, good for fifth place in the event and the third best time in the Bison record books. Johnson also ran to a fifth place finish in the 200 running a time of 23.65.
Sophomore Melanie Buczko cleared the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 12'11 ½" on her way to winning her fourth pole vault competition of the season and helping her team to victory. The Bison women dominated the competition tallying 200 points, 104.50 points more than second-place Duquesne. The Bison women notched nine event winners along with 11 additional top three place winners.
As of January 20, only nine other athletes have cleared the provisional height or higher, putting Buczko in very elite company. Buczko's leap is also a school and a facility record, marks that she has already set and reset several times over the course of her career.
Marjorie Grap continued to roll during her sophomore campaign breaking the school record in the 20-pound weight throw for the second-straight weekend. Grap's toss of 56'1 ¾" was good for first place on the day just ahead of teammate Angie McFarland in second place with a mark of 52-1 ¼". Grap also placed third in the shot put with a heave of 43-7 ¾".
Elsewhere in the field events, Tolu Fayanjuola jumped 18"1 ½" to take top honors in the long jump with Nina Reinhardt following in third place with a mark of 17' 9 ¾". Nicole Ayala placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 35'9 ¼". Denise Manero cleared 5'2 ¼" in the high jump, enough for third.
On the track, Sarah VandenBroek finished first in the 200-meters clocking a time of 26.19. In the 400, Amy Calvo ran to victory in 57.87 followed by Kat Allen in third place (59.75). Monique Boley was tops in the 500 clocking a time of 1:16.74.
In the distances, Jen Marsh ran 2:17.71 for the 800 victory. Christa Sawko took first in the 1,000 running a time of 2:55.43, just ahead of Offebia Hanson-Hall in third (2:59.42). Leanna Nastase clocked a time of 5:19.15 to place second in the mile while Kayla Halloran (1:26.34) and Erin Cranmer-Hart (10:40.64) went two-three in the 3000. The 4x400 relay team of Calvo, Boley, Allen and Lauren Bricker were also event winners clocking 3:57.79
The Bison will split their squads next week with some athletes heading to the Penn State National Invitational in State College, Pa., while the remainder of the Bison teams with compete at the Bison Open and Pentathlon. Both meets will begin on Friday, Jan. 28 and conclude on Saturday, Jan. 29.
