LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell cheerleading squad recently attended a National Cheerleaders Association summer camp in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and returned home with an armful of hardware. Competing against some of the nation's top cheerleading programs, the Bison took second place in the "Spirit Routine" in the all-girl division, finishing behind only Louisville and ahead of such programs as North Carolina State, UNC Wilmington, Rutgers and Robert Morris. Under the direction of head coach Heather Walters, Bucknell also was a winner of the "Spirit Stick," which is presented to the squad showing the most sincere spirit and enthusiasm throughout the entire week of camp. The Bison were also a National Championship Bid Winner, which is awarded to the team exemplifying the best technical skill and cheerleading technique. The Bucknell contingent was also awarded four evaluation ribbons, which are presented daily throughout the camp session. According to Walters, Bucknell's accomplishments were especially gratifying, given the fact that five new members of the team, including four incoming freshmen, were meeting their new teammates for the first time at the camp. Team captains Kristy Langley and Aubrey Grosser were joined by returnees Beth Ann Zarko, Alaina Generazio, Karen Chen, Allie Fleischer, Sandi Davidson, Nicole Hollbrook and Danielle Gutelius. New members of the team included Laura Davidson, Alyssa Beckler, Lauren Teschemacher, Ashlie Nawrocki and Hannah Kaczka. "I am extremely excited about the way our team met for the first time, really pulled together and represented Bucknell with a tremendous amount of energy," said Walters. "We have a lot to look forward to this season, and I think we'll do nothing but grow. To compete against past national champions and perform like we did is a phenomenal accomplishment." Bucknell's cheerleading squad will make its 2004-05 debut on Thursday, Sept. 2, during the Bison's football season opener at Villanova.
