LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Matt Daley (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) has been honored for the second time this season nationally and in the Patriot League, this time for his seven-inning no-hit, no-walk, 10 strikeout performance against Lehigh, the fourth no-hitter in Bucknell history. The Patriot League has tabbed him as its Pitcher of the Week, and Collegiate Baseball News has recognized Daley as one of two players in Division I this week as its Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week. At the school level, Daley has been named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week.
Daley was two hit batsmen from what would have been the first perfect game ever at Bucknell. It was the fourth-straight game that Daley has gone without an earned run, a streak that has extended to 29 innings. Daley's 1.93 ERA is the lowest in the Patriot League among regular starters, and his 6-0 record is on pace to break school (eight) and league marks (nine) for wins in a season.
Two weeks ago, Daley won the league's Pitcher of the Week award and the Bison Athlete of the Week award for going within one out of a nine-inning no-hitter against Dartmouth in Bradenton, Fla. on Mar. 20. He was also recognized that week as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America's co-National Pitcher of the Week. Daley shares the Collegiate Baseball News award this week with Dennis Bigley from Oral Roberts, who also threw a seven-inning no-hitter against Chicago State.
Daley figures to pitch again on Friday afternoon at Army. It will be an important series for the Bison, who at 6-2 in the league, stand one game behind Army for first place. The regular season champion will host the Patriot League Championship Series on May 8-9.
