The Bucknell men's and women's tennis teams ended their seasons with wins on Wednesday afternoon at Bloomsburg University. Bucknell's women recorded a 9-0 sweep, while the men won 6-3. The match was played under Bloomsburg's Division II rules, which count each doubles match separately, rather than the Division I rules under which a team must win two of the three doubles matches to claim one doubles point.
Nick Denefrio and Matt Pikus won at first doubles for the men, defeating Mike McGrath and Aleks Kalezic, 8-2, while Gerald DiChiara and Asher Salam won on court two for Bucknell, beating Brian Bogus and Kurt Caster, 8-5. Bloomsburg's Brendan Miller and Mark Vellek won at third, 8-6 over Brian Cohen and Matt Kutner.
Bloomsburg won the top two singles matches, with Denefrio falling to McGrath, 6-3, 6-3 and DiChiara losing to Kalezic, 6-3, 6-4. But the Bison claimed the last four singles matches, with Salam beating Bogus, 7-6(5), 6-3, Menezes knocking off Vellek, 6-2, 7-6(4), Matt Pikus defeating Caster, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, and Aaron Saperstein knocking off Mark Farnsworth, 7-6 (6), 6-1.
The women won every match contested for their 9-0 sweep. Veronica Brown and Nadezda Curcic defeated Iida Hokkanen and Emily Murphy, 8-2, at first, while Chelsea Mills and Tanya Sichko beat Julianne Bramante and Lindsey Wyckoff, 8-6, and Samantha Berthod and Rheanna Gaskin knocked off Lauren Colfer and Brande Hanstein, 8-3.
In singles play, Brown won the first set over Hokkanen, 6-2, before the Husky retired due to injury. On court two Gaskin defeated Bramante, 6-3, 6-0, and Curcic knocked off Wyckoff, 6-1, 6-1 on court three. Sichko recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win over Murphy at fourth, while Berthod defeated Hanstein, 6-1, 6-2 at fifth and Mills beat Colfer, 7-5, 6-3.
The win was the 16th of the season against four losses for the women, making 2003-04 the fourth season in which the women's team has won a Bucknell-best 16 matches. The first time was in the 1991-92 season, while Bucknell reached the mark most recently last year. The men finished with nine wins and 11 losses, narrowly missing their first non-losing season since 2002 after a 7-21 record last season.
