Bison Women's Track and Field Earns Blowout Win, Men Finish Second at Bucknell Five-Way

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's track and field team earned an astonishing 298 ? points at the Bucknell Five-Way on Saturday, lapping second-place Robert Morris' 121 point take. The Bucknell men were bested only by Rhode Island, 197-149. Maria Garcia broke the Bucknell hammer throw record for the third time in her four meets this season while winning that event for the Bison.
The Bucknell men won three of the 21 events contested, though Bucknell's second-place 4x100 relay team qualified for IC4A competition with its 41.93 second finish. The first Bison to break the tape was Ryan Delaney, who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a hand-timed 9:40.0, while Noel Powell scored Bucknell's second event win with his 23'4 ?" long jump. Aaron Hanlon earned Bucknell's third gold medal in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:55.10, just ahead of teammate Tom Prochilo's 1:55.91. One Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium record was broken on Saturday, as Justin Wotus of Robert Morris won the 200 in 21.20 seconds, breaking the previous record of 21.22, set in 1991.
After Rhode Island's 197 and Bucknell's 149 points, Lock Haven scored 97, Duquesne notched 87, and Robert Morris tallied 83.
The phenomenal success of the Bucknell women's team on Saturday was not just relative to their competiton, but to the Bucknell record books as well. The Bucknell top-10 lists were altered nine times during the meet, and the Bison women won 14 of the 21 events to accrue their 298 ? points.
Garcia's hammer throw was the highest change to the Bucknell record books, as she upped the standard to 190'2", beating Robert Morris' Nicki Downing by 12'4".
Tolu Fayanjuola and Melanie Buczko were both dual winners, with Fayanjuola taking the long jump with a leap of 18'3" and the 100 meters in 12.15 seconds. Buczko won the pole vault with a leap of 11'3 ?", and also claimed the 100-meter hurdles in 14.77 seconds, sixth-best in Bucknell history. Cindy Carlson won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:43.2, the fifth-fastest time in Bucknell annals. The 4x100 relay team qualified for ECAC competition by finishing in a Bucknell third-best 48.11 seconds, while Monique Boley took the 400 in 57.83 seconds.
Jennifer Marsh won the 1500 in 4:38.89, while Bucknell's last three event winners were also all-time top-10 finishes. Lauren Bricker won the triple jump with a leap of 38'7 ?", while Ann Doty finished second in the event with a Bucknell fourth-best 38'3 ?" jump. Christa Sawko won the 400-meter hurdles in a Bucknell sixth-best 1:04.16, while Meghan Frederick finished third in the javelin with a Bucknell eighth-best 129'5". Robert Morris' Stephanie Kuhn broke a stadium record by winning the competition with a toss of 160'9 ?". The previous best was 154'2", set in 1992.
Bucknell's track and field squads will be split next week, with some athletes going to the Penn Relays on Thursday-Saturday, while others will compete in the College of New Jersey competition on Friday and Saturday. The Patriot League Championships at Army are just two weeks away.
