EASTON, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team exploded for 17 hits and 10 runs in the opener, and then held on for a 2-0 victory in the nightcap to pick up a doubleheader sweep of Lafayette on Sunday, March 28. The Bison won the four-game series against the Leopards, 3-1.
In the first game, junior Kelli Haskins picked up the complete game victory, allowing seven hits and no earned runs while striking out two.
Six different Bison recorded two or more hits in the contest, led by sophomore Lauren Wible's 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Freshman Lauren Litts also had her first multiple-hit game, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a double for the only extra-base hit of the game.
The Orange and Blue actually trailed 2-1 entering the fourth inning, but the team got two runs across the plate in the top of that frame to take a 3-2 lead. The fifth inning was the breaker for the Bison, sending 12 batters to the plate and producing six hits and six runs in the frame to take a 9-2 advantage. Bucknell added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the 10-2 final.
The nightcap proved to be more of a nailbiter, with freshman Lisa Vacarro outlasting Lafayette's Lauren Belowich on the mound for her first career win. Vacarro gave up eight hits and struck out three on the way to the victory, Bucknell's first shutout of the year.
BU staked Vacarro to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman Meghan Feller reached base by fielder's choice, and moved into scoring position with her team-best third stolen base of the season. With two outs, Wible and sophomore Kris Devore delivered back-to-back singles, with Devore's hit plating Feller for the early lead.
The game would remain a 1-0 affair until the top of the seventh when senior Angela Stackhouse sent a pitch over the left centerfield fence for her second home run of the season, and a 2-0 Bucknell lead.
Lafayette's Abby Weichert led off the Leopards' final at-bat with a single to shortstop, but Vacarro got two fly outs and a line out to end the game.
Bucknell is 6-7 overall and 3-1 in Patriot League action. The Bison step out of conference play for a doubleheader at St. Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday, March 31, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
