LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the fifth and final time this season, Bucknell senior Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) and freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) have swept the Patriot League weekly women's basketball awards, announced by the conference office on Monday, March 1. It is the last time the awards will be presented this season.
Almind was named the Patriot League Player of the Week for the fifth time in her career, all this year, while Hollobaugh garnered Freshman of the Week honors for a Patriot League record eighth time this season. Both honors are the most for any player in the league this season. The former Patriot League record of seven for Rookie of the Week nods was held by Bucknell's own Vicki Quimby (1998-99) and Lisa Russell of Army (1991-92). Both Quimby and Russell were the Patriot League Rookie's of the Year in their respective freshman seasons.
Almind opened up a 1-1 weekend for the Bison with possibly her best all-around game of the season. The 6-0 guard/forward recorded 30 points, 18 rebounds, a career-high eight steals, three blocks and three assists in leading Bucknell to only its second-ever win over Holy Cross at the Hart Center. Almind nailed two critical free throws with 10 seconds remaining in the contest, and intercepted a pass at the other end to preserve the 85-82 win for BU.
In the second game of the weekend, Almind needed just 32 seconds to pull down her first rebound, in the process breaking the Patriot League single-season record for caroms, formerly held by Holy Cross' Amy O'Brien (344, 1997-98). She went on to score 17 points and grab 10 boards for her 17th double-double of the season, but the Orange and Blue dropped the final regular-season contest 75-66.
The co-captain leads the team, and is third among league players, with 17.3 points per game. Her 13.1 rebounds per game lead the country, and Almind will likely graduate with the Patriot League record for single-season rebounding average.
Hollobaugh garners the league's weekly rookie award after averaging 27.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 2.5 assists per game. The newcomer tied her career-high with 28 points in the win at Holy Cross, before coming back with a 27 point performance at Colgate.
With her sixth and seventh 20-point games, the 5-9 guard has tied Almind's rookie year total for 20-point games by a freshman, which is second in school history. In the last four games, Hollobaugh has reached at least 21 points, and is averaging 26.0 ppg.
Hollobaugh's 438 points this season rank second on BU's rookie scoring list behind Molly Creamer (475, 1999-2000), and her 16.2 points per game average, which is sixth in the Patriot League and tops among freshmen, is also second on the school's rookie scoring average chart.
Bucknell finished the regular season with a 14-13 overall record and a 7-7 mark in the Patriot League. The Bison earned the fifth-seed for the upcoming conference tournament, and will face fourth-seeded Holy Cross in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m.
