HAMILTON, N.Y. - Mark Linebaugh scored 15 points and Colgate erased a 10-point deficit with 10 minutes to play in a 60-57 victory over Bucknell Sunday afternoon at Cotterell Court.
With the loss the Bison fell to 13-14 overall and 9-5 in Patriot League play. Bucknell will be the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and play Holy Cross in the opening round at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 6 at the Show Place Arena. Bucknell and Holy Cross split two meetings this season, with each winning on its home floor.
Chris McNaughton led Bucknell with 19 points, while Kevin Bettencourt and Charles Lee added nine each.
Colgate (14-13, 6-8) hit Bucknell with a barrage of 3-pointers in the second half, including four during a tide-turning 20-2 run that turned a 46-36 deficit into a 56-48 lead.
McNaughton's three-point play gave the Bison that 10-point lead at the 10:05 mark, but Andrew Zidar answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession. McNaughton's dunk pushed it back to a nine-point game at 48-39, but the Raiders stunned the Bison by scoring the next 17 points.
Linebaugh's 3-pointer at the 5:40 mark gave Colgate its first lead since 14-12, and Alvin Reed followed a Bucknell miss with another trey to make it 52-48. Zidar and Linebaugh hit short jumpers to complete the run, as Bucknell went scoreless for a span of 6:36.
The Bison nearly pulled off a comeback of their own, though, when Kevin Bettencourt hit five straight free throws and Lee added two with 57 seconds left after a steal on the inbounds to make it 57-55.
Linebaugh hit Colgate's biggest shot of the night, a driving layup with 28 seconds to play that pushed it back to a two-possession game at 59-55. Bettencourt missed a long 3-pointer and Linebaugh hit 1 of 2 free throws with 16 seconds left to seal the verdict.
Bucknell used stifling defense to grab a 27-18 halftime lead. The Bison forced eight turnovers and held Colgate to 8-for-27 shooting (29.6 percent) in the half.
McNaughton scored 10 points in the first half while John Clark had six points and four assists. The Bison missed their first five shots of the day, all from point-blank range, but made 13 of their last 21 to finish the half.
Mark Linebaugh's 3-pointer gave Colgate a 14-12 lead, before the Bison closed the half on a 15-4 run. McNaughton's dunk tied it at 14 and Charles Lee put Bucknell ahead with a driving layup and free throw - the only charity attempt for either team in the half.
Colgate made 8 of 18 3-point attempts, while the Bison were 0-for-14 from long range.
