"Miami was tons of fun," said senior rower Joan Wendler. "It's was a great place for team bonding through our many adventures in South Beach and of course, learning to row together in the boat."
Twenty-three varsity women and eight novice women rowed twice a day from 6 to 9:30 AM and 3 to 6 PM. The women typically napped a little after the morning practice and then hit the beach for a couple hours before preparing for their afternoon practice.
"We were able to take a lot of strokes and continue to work on our basic skills," commented Head Coach Stephen Kish '92. "It was also a great time to welcome back a few rowers who had spent the first semester abroad as well as try out a few novices in the varsity boats."
Other programs training at the same site were Boston University, Boston College, University of Buffalo, Brown University, University of Connecticut, Fordham University and Hofstra University. NCAA rules prohibit crews from any sort of competition or scrimmage during winter training trips.
"I think it was one of our most productive and successful training trips ever, even compared to the last thirteen years of spring training trips," said Coach Kish. "I am very pleased with what we have done so far this year. Since the first week of September, the group has been doing a great job. Most importantly, the attitude and energy of the squad is very positive and ambitious."
Upon returning to campus, the full team of forty women embarked on a very challenging period of land training which will last until the middle of March. At that time, the program will head south to Elberton, GA for a spring training trip. The Bison will kick off their spring racing season in Georgia against the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds on March 18th.
