EASTON, Pa. - Junior Lillian Drumgold hit a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to end the first half, capping an 8-0 run by the Bison and giving the squad a 35-26 lead at the intermission, and propelling the team to a dominating 67-48 win over Lafayette in Patriot League women's basketball action on Sunday, January 25. The win features Bucknell's largest margin of victory this season.
It was a nip and tuck game at the beginning with both teams exchanging buckets for the first four minutes. The Orange and Blue finally jumped out to a seven-point lead after a 12-4 run that featured points from five different players gave the squad an 18-11 lead with just over half of the frame to play.
Bucknell maintained at least a four-point lead until the Leopards came back with a 7-2 run of their own to get within one, 23-22, with 4:43 to go. Four straight points from freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh pushed it back to a five-point BU lead, but four-consecutive from Lindsay Myers at the other end cut it back to one with 1:31 until the intermission.
A Brooke Tomovich three-point play with 43 seconds remaining started the 8-0 run for the Orange and Blue, Hollobaugh followed with a fastbreak layup with 12 seconds left, and Drumgold's three as time expired gave the Bison their largest halftime lead in Patriot League play this season.
BU built its lead to as many as 20 in the first 10 minutes of the second half, limiting Lafayette to just one field goal in its first 12 attempts of the frame. The Bison lead would not dip below 17 the rest of the game as the Bucknell defense continually forced the host team into desperation shots as the shot clock wound down.
The Orange and Blue, who held a 41-37 advantage on the glass, also outscored Lafayette 37-18 in the paint. The Bison also capitalized on the Leopards 24 turnovers, scoring 29 points off of the Lafayette miscues.
Almind led all players with her Patriot League leading 13th double-double of the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds. She also handed out four assists, grabbed five steals and blocked three shots, becoming Bucknell's single-season leader in rejections with 42 on the year. Also in double-figures were Drumgold with a career-high 14, and Hollobaugh with 13.
Lafayette was led by Colleen Fitzpatrick and Kristin Doherty with 10 each.
Bucknell improves to 9-9 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League play. The Bison are off until Friday, January 30, when they host Colgate at 5:30 p.m. Lafayette falls to 0-18 overall, 0-5 in the conference.
