LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell placed four players in double-figures, led by 18 from senior Desire Almind, on its way to a 72-63 win over Navy in Patriot League women's basketball action on Saturday, January 17. The win snapped a two-game slide for the Bison, and gave the team its first conference win of the year.
The first half was a battle that featured eight lead changes and six ties with neither team leading by more than six. The Bison trailed 7-2 before Almind rattled off five unanswered to knot the game at the 16:07 mark. Bucknell made it an 8-0 run with a free throw from junior Lillian Drumgold and a jumper by freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh to take over 10-7 with 14:43 left in the half.
The Mids erased the three-point deficit and took over 14-10 with 14:43 to go, and built that to a 21-15 lead just over halfway through the frame. The Orange and Blue came storming back, capping a 9-2 run when Hollobaugh found junior Laura Hatalsky for a cutting layup to put the host team back on top, 24-23.
Navy led 31-28 in the final minute of the half, but Hollobaugh scored the final three points of the frame to carry the teams into the intermission in a 31-31 deadlock.
Bucknell opened the second half on a 10-2 run, getting six points from Drumgold during that time, to build an eight-point advantage with 16:23 to go. The Bison never trailed the rest of the game, although the Mids did get as close as three on two different occasions.
BU was clinging to a four-point lead with just over ten minutes to play before two Almind free throws jump started a 14-6 run that pushed it to a 12-point game, Bucknell's largest of the contest at 64-52 with 3:50 left. Junior Brooke Tomovich capped the run with her second three-pointer of the night, and recorded six of her career-high 17 points during the crucial stretch.
The game was far from over, however, as the Mids promptly rattled off seven unanswered, taking advantage of two Bison turnovers, to get back within five with just over two minutes remaining. The Orange and Blue pushed it back to eight with just 45 seconds left, before Abi Campbell hit a three-pointer with 33 ticks left to bring Navy back to a five-point game. The Mids were forced to foul, however, and BU was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line to take the contest, 72-63.
Despite struggling from the floor, and being held to a season-low five rebounds, Almind still led all players with 18 points on the strength of a Sojka Pavilion record 14 free throws made on 15 attempts. The 6-0 guard/forward also added five assists, six steals and two blocks. Also in double-figures were Tomovich with 17, Drumgold with 11 and Hollobaugh with 10.
Navy was paced by Nikki Curtis' career-high 14 points. Adrienne Roseti and Kate Maslowski were also in double-figures scoring with 12 and 10, respectively.
Bucknell improves to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in Patriot League play. The Bison are off until traveling to Army on Friday, January 23 for a 5:30 p.m. game. Navy falls to 6-11 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
