PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Despite a career-high 15 kills and six blocks from freshman Jennie Smith, the Bucknell volleyball team fell 3-2 at Penn on Tuesday night in its final non-league tuneup before beginning Patriot League play this weekend.
The Bison won games two and three by 30-22 and 30-24 margins, but the Quakers pulled out 30-23 and 15-8 decisions to steal the victory. Bucknell dropped its third straight match and fell to 4-8 on the season, while Penn improved to 4-3. Half of Bucknell's losses this season have come in five games.
Smith was terrific for the Bison, hitting .317 with only two errors in 41 attempts, and she added seven digs and a service ace. Jackie Leahy finished with 14 kills and Brandi Trapasso and Sarah Groman added 12 apiece. Trapasso also logged a season-high 28 digs.
Cara Thomason led Penn with 16 kills, while Michelle Kauffman chipped in 15.
The Bison hit .151 for the match, while Penn hit .173. The Quakers hit .270 in games four and five, however, compared to Bucknell's .135.
Bucknell steps into Patriot League play this weekend when it hosts Army on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Holy Cross Saturday at 4 p.m. in Davis Gym.
